Dave,
During my day job as an engineering assistant for the county I live in I'm around construction equipment on an almost daily basis. What I have found is that exhausts never seem to rust to the bright orange hues we see very often on models. It's been my experience that after heat and the environment have taken their toll on the thin sheet metal bodies of mufflers and tailpipes that, instead, that overall the metal turns a light, dusty-grayish color with a hint of rust-red. Then, when the metal begins to breakdown, spots of very dark rust begin to appear. These spots often collect to create patterns of dark rust.
Now, this observation is just based on my own experience and may not be appropriate in all instances. But, again, in my years around dozers, scrapers, ukes ...etc. (equipment that operates in the sometimes-harsh outdoor environment just like tanks), I've never seen any part of exhaust systems reduced to the bright orange state that we as modellers have accepted as the norm.
