Alan,
my method is similar to Brians, but i do the lighting up of the big areas by airbrush.

1. airbrush your vehicle in the desired colour (preferably use acrylics).
2. then take the same colour into the airbrush and add little drops of white until the desired shade of the base colour is reached. then thinn it a little more, not too much (with water or alkoholic thinner).
Brush the areas cloudy and make sure, not to get to close to the edges. it is pretty easy and when you do it you will pretty fast know what i mean.
3. make your washing (on ml/rarities world are pretty interisting articles by MIG Jimenez - recommended)
4. make your highlighting with the dry brush method.

The method is good for all single colour paintings.
