I wondered that for the longest time myself, but I accidently found a way that seems to look about right. I take about 2, 3 months to actually get to the point where I can start to actually paint the model, and being a fiddly person, I was constantly handling the brass rounds for my Panther. And lo and behold, they now actually look like they should just from handling for a couple of months. :)
