I do something similar and usually paint them with a black/brown (more black than brown) mixture of artist's oils. Then I scrape a hobby knife across a stick of artist's graphite so it is a fine powder then rub it on the wheels with my finger to give it that greasy/metallic look. You can kind of see examples (although there isn't really a good shot) in two of the models I have posted here.
