Nick,

Whatever you do don't use silver and if you are using Fruilmodel tracks don't sand or polish using the natural color. All the methods that I have read as replys sound very close to what actual wear on tracks look like. I personally drybrush PollyScale Graphite then follow with a No. 2 pencil. This past weekend I was at a demo that featured a Sherman tank and I made sure I paid attention to such wear marks. Where metal tracks touched the ground, engaged the sprocket teeth and rubbed against the road wheels the metal became polished. It was shiny but a darker color than Fruil tracks or silver. If the light wasn't shinning at the correct angle it actually looked dark. Pencil lead helps fill this bill quite readily. Just don't use any bright metalic colors and you should be fine.
