Using my HP 950C, paper from this site-www.craftycomputerpaper.co.uk/clear%20water-slip%20decals.htm -and a combination of everyones advice I've had some success. I think the key was Christophers' advice to leave the ink to dry for 24 hours (the instructions which came with paper recommended just 1/2 hour drying time). My remaining problem is with the excessive thickness of the film, but I've got a different brand of paper to try (Experts Choice), which should cure that one.
So, for the benifit of those who are thinking of trying their hands at decal manufacturing, this is what I did.
My aim was to produce WWII period stencilling for 155mm rounds using information kindly supplied by Kurt Laughlin (see image below). Because printer ink is no where near dense enough to give coverage on O.D, I left the AF.V Club shells in their un-painted sand colour, reasoning that the plastic is as glossy as any laquer. Then, I printed the decal paper solid yellow. After a little dying time the stencil pattern was printed on top of the yellow. For some reason, once the decal is applied, the green background appears several shades darker, hence the pale appearence of the master. It's also interesting to note, that the image was clearest with the printer set to a low quality 'draft' setting. After 24+ drying time, I sealed the image with Humbrol Matt cote. I tried Humbrol gloss acrylic laquer ('Just Crystal Clear'), but found this left the decal way to stiff to conform to the shell curvature. The final application was with the Micro set/sol system, then the O.D shell colour was hand painted up to the edges of the decal. Still a bit of fine tuning to do, but it does work. I'd like a go with the Testors/Future Floor Wax methods, but havn't got a clue who carries the products in the U.K or Europe.
Thanks again everyone,
