I have a few references to StuG muzzle brakes being painted black on purpose. Now, I realise that the Germans apparently used a kind of propellent that didn't leave much residue so what appears to be black powder residue is in fact bark, or very dark, paint.

If true then why would they paint the brakes as such? Was this common for other types of vehicles?
