Hello Paul,
Perhaps it was just a matter of "neatness" ?
I know of a fair number of examples on this in aviation too.
Some, (mostly turbo-prop) planes eg. Fokker F-27, Fokker F-50 but also a joint mil/civ heli as the S-61/Seaking series have panels or parts of cowlings behind the exhaust painted black on purpose.
I'm told this is done to camouflage the otherwise sooty appearance on the rear parts of the cowlings. Soot on black doesnt show up as bad as soot on bare alu. Needs less frequent cleaning. Therefore less time consuming. Thus efficient.
Though I'm not 100%, is just m i g h t be that on more or less the same train of thought these StuG muzzle brakes were painted black too.
It's just an idea, nothing more.
