I wonder if what you are seeing are just muzzle brake replacements from older stock.Continued fire would darken the barrel paint as well.
But if hard pressed maintenance units merely replaced Muzzle brakes or barrels without painting them to match the rest of the vehicle the turn around time to put vehicles back into use would be cut.
If the replacement brakes were shipped from the factory in non painted "steele" or "Panzer Gray" a quick barrel or muzzle brake change would produce the contrast.
I recall seeing several pics of Tigers with new barrels in a raw unpainted state while the rest of the vehicle was well cammo-ed.
There could infact have been orders issued to paint them black for what ever reasons...if you access to that info I'd sure love to know their thinking.
Just my 2 cents helping to muddy the waters...
