Hi Paul,

Weapon oil is also one factor that explains the dark colour. When the barrell is cleaned some excess oil always remains for example in the outside of the muzzle brake. When the gun is fired, the oil gets hot and changes into very dark black brown colour (think how car engine oil looks after use) that sticks to the barrel over time.
