Restayn's 'Tiger I on the Eastern Front' (which, obviously, deals with the Tiger I only) says the colours were improvised, but depicts the red as a bright red. The b&W photos, however, indicate that the red was the same shade as the red-brown overspray. IMO you probably have a fair degree of latitude (after all, Panzer crews had access to red paint for tactical numbers, but red-brown would have been easy to obtain and less visible).
