I just recently bought the book Tigers in Combat I by Wolfgang Schneider a very authoritive book on all the Tiger groups. As far as the charging knight he says "The color sometimes varied because the symbol had to be repainted several times. This caused some vexation on the part of the maintenance soldiers." I would imagine the bright red would appear right after it was painted with little in service wear.
