Hi folks,
This reference to Italian Air Force green is interesting indeed!
It is one I have never come across before....which green then? The Italians defintely used one dark and one lighter green paint on their aircraft in N-Africa...
The information is fascinating and surely could be true.By the time German Tigers arrived in N-Africa most if not all of the Italian forces had retreated no doubt leaving stocks of everything including paint behind in useable quantities.
At the same time it seems to be incomplete information, which does not really help you in establishing the correct colour.
I do not recall in which volume, but one of the Concord books on the German army in N-Africa defnitely refers to the green colour of Tigers in Tunisia as US Army olive drab.
Also in Patrick Stansell's Modeller's Guide to the Tiger Tank mentions US OD for a Tunisian Tiger (pp.72-73).
According to the text the original DAK sand yellow DAK made vehicles too visible in the Tunisian landscape and the Germans used stocks of "liberated" US olive drab to repaint vehicles especially Tigers.
I think by now there are as many stories on the correct shade as there were Tigers in Tunisia.
Anyone's guess is as good as mine, espcially when you keep in mind that whatever paint was used, the originaly applied paint must have faded to numerous sub-shades as well.
Happy modelling
