Yes it was very dark grey, almost black. A good colour is the Gunze one. Also the early war scheme was dark grey and a very dark brown. It is next to impossible to see in black+white photographs. The Tiger was all dark grey however.

There is good reference on this in one of the Panzer Tracts Panzer I books I believe. I don't have it handy to check though.
