Colour footage can be misleading as to the actual shades of colour on vehicles. Colour film from that period has a lot of contrast and the colours tend to be bleached (something that Spielberg replicate in 'Saving Private Ryan' to make it look more authentic). I think colour footage is most useful for getting an idea of things like weathering. I have footage of 'Panzer Grey' vehicles in Russia which appear to be a very light shade of grey, partly due to dust and partly because the colour seems to have faded. Other footage shows what appear to be very dark grey vehicles, and the grey has a distinct bluish tinge. The same observations are made about Olive Drab, so I don't think it's something to be too pedantic about.
Also, I understand (although I don't have my references handy) that the shade changed during the war. I'll check this if anyone's interested. |
