'Panzer Grey' was actually Dunkelgrau (RAL 7021). It was a dark colour, however it lightened over time (and not just due to dust etc - the colour itself changed). The precise shade also varied from batch to batch, but there was no change in the official shade (I was wrong about that). Compared to the colour chips in 'Camouflage Colors 1939-1945', Tamiya's dark grey looks a little too light, but it matches some of the colour photos.
Looking at your Tiger, I'd say the colour looks okay for a vehicle that has been in service for some time, although the bluish highlights are probably a little inaccurate. If one was being really pedantic, then perhaps it's unlikely that the paint on tank that went into service in late 1942 would not suffer much fading before it was repainted dark yellow in early 1943, because it would have been winter over this period. |
