For contemporary vehicles, I think the semi-gloss is accurate for fairly new equipment. I don't know about WWII. Dust and weather would probably take the gloss off pretty quickly. Imagine a new car painted with a semi-gloss paint using a roller and left out of doors in a dusty area for three months.
