Helo Ken, Dave and all

Yep, Dave's story is the same as mine; used to work with enamels only, thinned with white spirits, changed over to acrylics mainly because of complaints from the awful smell especially after airbrushing.

On the health question, please stick to a Basic Rule.
Whatever you use as thinner, as soon as it has the international sign of an orange square with a black diagonal cross on it, take it seriously and wear a respirator at all times.
Even "only 20 minutes" can be very harmful Dave.
The stuff accumulates in your body and eg. six times 20mins-only each week still adds up to quite a lot.

Incidentally, the same orange/black Harmful Logo is on Tamiya's acrylic thinner. Even though its smell is not as bad and does not linger in the house for more than a few minutes that does not mean it is less harmful.

The only safe way is to use acrylics that can be thinned with water, with or without some liquid detergent for airbrushing.
Even then, the paint itself must also be considered.
Harmful paints obviously only get a little less harmful when thinned with water.

Hope this helps and good (...ad safe..) modelling
Jerry
