Once upon a time, there was a modeller who started masking his pieces with Tamiya masking tape. It sucked! All color layers were torn away. Jokes apart, it was me. So I started masking my models not with Tamiya tape but with the so-called "paper tape", you know, the one by Tesa AG that's used when painting your walls at home. To prevent it remove the color layer, I found it would be better if you stick it and then take it off from a clean cloth twice or more, before using on your model as a mask. It reduces its adhesive capability a bit.
