I haven't tried it yet myself, but a lot of people rave about the Citadel primers from Games Workshop.
I've never really cared for the Tamiya primers myself, the spray nozzle really puts it on very thick at times. I'm still looking for a good primer that I can use through an airbrush.
I would suggest avoiding automotive primers if possible. Many of them are designed to prime as well as fill, and build up quite thick if you aren't careful. Many kits it doesn't matter, but the finer the detail the better the chance of it getting lost.
