Erik,
I don't know if this helps, but a few weeks back I tried using the wide end of flat toothpicks and it came pretty close to the pattern that is sometimes used in ambush patterns, although I don't think I'm brave enough to use it right now on any of my armor.
Try referring to some of the pics downloaded on here and get in touch with the builders, that may help.
