Hi Thomas,
I agree a switch to either Polly Scale or Tamiya is in order, Ive
used both for years with no problems of pealing and I never prime
before painting. The most essential part is your pre-wash in dish
soap, make sure its clean as it can be followed by a overcautious
rinse. For masking try some Silly Putty, it holds well to the surface,
will conform to any irregularities, and peals off quite easilly.
It leaves no residue on plastic or pevious coats as well.
This method is perfect for hard edge camo lines on compound curves.
I do use the Mr. Surfacer, but mostly to achieve a cast effect by
stippling, not primarilly as a primer. I had MM ruin a HMS Hood for
me by tearing off in chunks, I'll never touch the stuff again.
