RLM Sandy Brown is a lousy match to Dunkelgelb. Gunze doesn't offer the right color, so go to Tamiya or one of the other manufacturers. The three-color scheme could be either Dunkelgelb overall with a soft-edged pattern of Rotbraun and Olivgrun, or Red Primer overall with hard-edged pattern of Olivgrun and Dunkelgelb, or overall Olivgrun with a hard-edged pattern of Dunkelgelb and Rotbraun.
The first pattern was in force until September 1944, the second pattern was standard from September until late December 1944 (but authorized until March 1945), and the third pattern was authorized from December 1944 until the end of the war. The so-called "Ambush Scheme" was either of the last two patterns with additional polka dots of the contrasting colors added on top of the larger bands (this scheme was done if the factory had time and paint to spare).
The first Jagdtigers were not delivered until December, but assembly began earlier. To confuse matters further, some plants continued old schemes after they were discontinued (some of the 653rd's Jagdtigers do appear to be in the pre-September scheme), and it's anybody's guess when or if a particular plant switched from the second scheme to the third, based on b&w photos. The 512th's vehicles were delivered in 1945, so one of the latter two seems most likely for X7. Take your pick. |
