Adding onto Glenn's post. I think that with digital photography of our own models, modellers have been able to really look closely at how to better simulate actual 1/1 scale vehicles.

Note the use of dusting (pastels and pigments) and paint wear (although easily overdone).

If you look at period photos or color photos of existing vehicles, you'll see that most exposed edges are actually DARKER than their counterparts. This is due to dust being rubbed off, hand oils, etc. Look at any WW2 era photo of an M7 Priest for instance. You see where the crew's handling of the upper edge armor has made it darker. A frosty drybrush onto that surface doesn't mimic the real thing any more.

Even the looking into metal wear: the silver edge on worn parts has given way to a subtle metallic dull brown or dark brown completely. This better mimics the quick oxidation of exposed metal in most cases. Look at construction equipment. You don't see any silvery edges on those (except for maybe tread faces or dozer blades). You see nicked paint -- and dark brown oxidized metal beneath. Again, this is an area that has quickly gained in cachet value due to Mr. Takahishi of Armour Modelling. However it's easily overdone.

Paul Owen has a good article on this site called "Weathering Heresies" Very good observations at a time a few years ago when everyone was still just doing the wash/drybrush formula for finishing.

OVer on missinglynx, Mig Jiminez has four good articles too:

Have a read and judge for yourself. Enjoy.
