YOu're right on target. Building both a/c and armor, I am aware of the completely different philosophies that are required to make an attractive final project. And you do find yourself with a/c guys who wonder why is the tank all mucked up.

The fact is that their emphasis has more to do with artistically accentuating the shape, form and motion of the aircraft lines rather than mimicking it down to a miniature, highly accurate model, IMHO.

Look at panel lines for 1/48 or smaller a/c. In reality, these lines don't have 1mm 1:1 scale tolerance -- yet you'd be skewered if you don't engrave panel lines for models.

The most exciting aircraft I've seen are ones where the builder takes time to add the dimpling and stresses of the sheet metal on its framework. Now THAT takes some real skill and an eye for realism!!!

That being said, aircraft guys in general have better decal skills and better airbrush camo application skills than most AFV modellers, I would say.
