I think it's a matter of personal preference. I've always got on better with water based acrylic washes, I can thin them far more with either alcohol or water, windex or other substances - each one changes how the wash dries. They also dry pretty quickly.
Others will say that oil paint is better, the only solution is to do what you aready are doing - practice!
