I don't know about WW2 German stuff, but certainly in the modern British Army our tools tend to be painted quite a dark green. Metal tools such as crow bars etc tend to be left in their original blackened state, but a wooden handled shovel for example would be green. That level of maintenance is up to the vehicle crew and exact colours vary according to what's available from the stores. Hope that helps a bit.
