Hello.
The tools used with German vehicles were not usually painted in vehicle colors. The vast majority of newly produced vehicles were (pre)painted in the factories. Things like additional equipment (machine guns, tools etc.) were mounted by the "Heereszeugamt" (I don't know the english equivalent - perhaps 'arsenal" matches) after the vehicles had passed the inspection tests. So the equipment itself appeared in their original colors (gunmetal, blackend etc.) or unpainted wooden handles but the fixings should be in vehicle color.
with toolings on vehicles back from field repair units or general/factory repair in Germany it could be possible that they were totally painted in vehicle color (even in three color camo) after repainting the vehicle itself (always depending on the damage to the section(s) the tools were mounted).
I have a color video with a section dealing with the repair and painting of a damaged Panzer IV during the battles of Kursk - you should see how generous one of the guys is spray-painting parts of the tank ...
hth
