Of course, the downside to painting the tools in place is that they get stuck to the clamps or the vehicle's surface when the paint dries and will have to be knocked loose the next time the tool is needed. I expect the tools would be painted off the vehicle unless the paint crew was in a real hurry (of course, German tanks up until September, 1944, were painted by their own crews, who would probably worry about something like that--US tanks, when they got field cammo at all, were painted by engineer battalions, who may not have cared).
