It' a question that frequently arises and the answer is probably to found in studying period photo's, however- what were the tools treated with at the factory? Painting doesn't seem like a good idea. If it can't 'breath' wood shrinks. This maybe isn't an issue with spades, as the head is generally pinned to the shafts, but anyone who's had the experience of an axe or hammer head flying off on the up stroke, followed by a moments terror wondering where it will land, will atest that this shrinkage is best avoided. The traditional treatment for shafts is linseed oil- but how well does paint stick to an oiled surface? I suspect that after a little use most would be worn away- the same goes for the heads. Nothing polishes a spade better than a little digging and maintenance afterwards is generally done by wiping the steel with an oily rag.
