Alan,
I took photos of a StuGIIIG at the Patton Armor Museum a few years ago and yes, definitely, the missing zimmerit exposed red-lead primed areas ... without question. The tabasco sauce-colored primer stood in stark contrast with the Dunkelgelb overall color.
