Pete,
Good question. Actually, I think the purpose of filtering is to alter the tonal value of the base color of your model, but in a very subtle fashion. This being said, it would be safe to find colors that compliment your base scheme, rather than those so close to the same value that they lose their impact. Try various greens and browns to begin with. Those colors are along the same "earth" tones as German Dunkelgelb (or ochre, which is also quite similar), but should offer enough contrast to be effective. Remember, the whole idea is not to change the base color, rather just alter its value ever-so-slightly, and not in such a way as to overwhelm the base scheme. When you are comfortable using these colors as filters, try a more bold approach and begin experimenting with other colors such as blue and red. Properly thinned and applied, these colors offer a very unique result, as well.
