One of the benefits to adding dots of color to the surface and then brushing across it with a turpenoid brush is that you get little streaks which gives the wash a directional look and implies a sense of weathering as well as altering the base coat's color.

If you don't do the "drag through the dots" approach and just do a more traditional wash approach you still get the weathered base coat affect just without the streaks or implied direction.

Try them both. You can always just wash it all away and start again.
