A "filter" is the same thing as a glaze as using in painting. A glaze is a transparent layer of paint applied over the base coat.

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glaze#Painting_technique

Usually this is applied with an airbrush and is made of a very thin mixture of paint.

This is not to be confused with a "wash", which generally more of which is applied and settles in the models crevices.

Glazes also have the benefit of "smoothing" out an airbrushed camouflage scheme, often hiding the dreaded "splatter" appearance of the secondary colours.

Paul.
