Curious how you paint them, Paul?
My technique I've been using the past few years is th SPRAYpaint flat black (not too worried about graininess, and I think it enhances the look of tracks...), wash with various rusts and browns, then highlight progressively from dark steel to a light gunmetal very subtly. I use acrylic washes mostly, though with plenty of flow enhancers and retarders added to the mix.
