I paint the tracks the same colour as the ground they drove over and then dry brush them in dark steel progressing to a bright steel. Sometimes I add mud with the base colour, this is just the same paint with stuff in it like chalk dust, I rub this off with my finger before it dries so that it says in the hollows... there's nothing worse looking than mud with a highlight of steel/silver paint :-)
