Tiger I production was completed during the period when camouflage practice was in the hands of the individual units. Tanks were coated in Zimmerit putty and oversprayed with Dunkelgelb and sent to the user units, who received concentrated pastes of Dunkelgelb and Rotbraun. Shade of the secondary colors could vary depending on the type of thinner and amount used. Cammo was generally sprayed on free-hand, so the patterns were normally soft-edged.
A tank returned to the factory for major rebuilding might also be repainted, so after September 1944, a hard-edged camouflage might have been applied at the factory, but this is speculative.
