Paul,
I understood that the photographers made notes for each image (plates?) that was to be colored. Color and hue were numerically coded and these notes were used back at the studio. In this case, IIRC, the colorization was done by the printers for a book.
I fully expect that this is known to you all but it’s important to remember that professional photographers did this for a living in the old days :-).

We can speculate, 60 years later, about such things and if you think this is a conundrum, try finding expert navel historians who can agree to the color of the DKR Bismarck’s turret tops the day it was destroyed. Even the gunnery officer who swears blind he was ordered to and carried those orders has no explanation as to why there was no evidence of the yellow “air recognition” paint scheme. The officers of the Rodney also confirmed the color having been seen as Bismarck listed heavily over on his side but the aviation pilots denied it and stated to the dark color that was found almost 60 years later.
The point is if professionals on the spot don’t know what was going on then how can we?
Steve
