Zimmerit was discontinued in early September, 1944, and the camouflage for all German tanks was officially changed to red primer as a base color with hard-edged bands of Olivgrun and Dunkelgelb applied at the factory instead of by the user units. If time and paint supplies allowed, contrasting spots were painted in the bands on vertical surfaces (the so-called Ambush Pattern).
The steel-wheel vehicles were a very small batch produced around September and October, 1944, well before the Olivgrun-based pattern was introduced in December (that final pattern was Olivgrun overall with hard-edged bands and spots of Dunkelgelb and Rotbraun). There are several photos available of the steel-wheeled vehicles knocked out in the Ardennes offensive.
The steel wheels were discontinued on Panthers because they were too harsh for the standard Panther tracks, which suffered too many track guide breakages. The steel wheels were to be reintroduced after a new double link track was introduced, but this never came about.
Unfortunately, the Dragon kit also has the engine deck fan tower for the crew compartment heater and the chin-style mantlet, both items not available when these tanks were built. One vehicle at Paderborn was retrofitted with these two components for tests, but it may have been the only one. Dragon's other Panther G (with the infrared night fighting gear), also has these features, but it has the correct rubber-rimmed road wheels.
