If the material is brass, you could dunk it in Blacken It, a solution sold in model railroad stores. This chemically blackens the chain. You can then add thin washes of rust or rub with graphite for a metallic effect.
Real chain is usually nickel plated when new, and becomes rusty when the plating wears off. A dull silvery steel color would work. Or dark brown dry brushed with red orange. The chain probably will stiffen up, so paint it after it's draped the way you want it. Or else just break up the links after the paint dries.
If it's the fine black hobby chain sold through railroad shops, I probably wouldn't paint it at all. |
