Hi Andy-
If the chain is brass, I find running it through a candle flame works well enough. After you've run the chain through the flame, you'll see it is well blackened and grimy looking. If you want the chain to be rusty as well, why not see what happens if you leave it water for a day or two? If you cannot wait a "day or two" there is always dry brushing some rust coloured paint or Rustall.
