Paul,
A trick I learned several years ago with this stuff...using the 500 or 1000 surfacer to fill seams or small gaps. Wait several hours for the Surfacer to dry then take a cotton swab (Q-tip for ears, make-up, etc) soaked in denatured alcohol and "work" the area to remove the excess. For some reason (don't know why) the alcohol works to remove the Surfacer. I have gotten very clean seams with this method.
