Paul, I bought a Badger BILLION-AIR MODEL 480-2 "silent" compressor from the late Behnsens On Richards (now Loomis on Main) 6 years ago. It cost a fortune but I have never regretted it. When pumping, it just hums like a refrigerator and then when the tank is full, there is a "phssst!" and it shuts down until the tank needs to be topped up. They are widely available on line e.g., http://airbrush-depot.com/scripts/depot.exe?pgm=compress.bbx I don't know of any local source (Loomis might still have them). There are other brands which are similar, but all $500-$1000
Although I didn't know it at the time, Behnsens was way overpriced and I expect Loomis might be the same (I haven't gone there recently). However, it looks like this one will last the rest of my life and I can barely hear when it pumps and for those reasons the initial expense is worth it.
