I used to use tap water for things like washes. I ended up getting little lumps of mineral deposits on the undersides of pieces. Since then, I switched to distilled, and no more mineral deposits.
I think there definitely is a need for it, depending on the quality (or source -- the Pocono mountains are not too far from me, and all their associated limestone)...
