Hey Guys,
Well this is one subject that for some reason I love to hold forth on! Many of you have already commented in your usual erudite fashion on this , so forgive my parroting some of it (I'll be brief, I promise).
I use Gunze and Tamiya almost exclusively now. I have tried other acrylics in the past and just didn't have the luck I've had with the ever reliable G&T.
I use Tamiya paints thinned with Tamiya thinner for broad coverage. BUT...for finer work I mix it with Isopropyl alcohol. I am sure there is some esoteric, chemistry-related reason that it seems to spray a fine line better when mixed with alcohol (but it is beyond me why).
I use plain alcohol to thin Gunze BUT: it seems to spray better when mixed with a higher ratio of thinner, usually 60% thinner to 40% paint. When mixed 50-50 it sometimes has a more "orange peel" effect. I have also used Tamiya thinner with Gunze; however (for also-unexplainable reasons) plain ol' alcohol seems to improve the flow and finish.
Finally....(sighs of relief and applause noted) I have discovered that Vallejo "Model Air" "Aluminum" does give the best metallic finish that I have ever seen for an acrylic. The best part is that you can brush paint it on small areas (such as aircraft landing gear) and have it look quite convincing. It is fairly slow drying and thus much more forgiving of "the brush", unlike Gunze and Tamiya, which as you probably know DON'T take well to brush painting. I tried the regular Vallejo "Aluminum" for brush painting and really didn't like it as well (again, mysterious incomprehensible forces at work). My only caveat about the "Model Air" aluminum is that if you airbrush it, it seems to be a bit fragile and doesn't mask well unless you leave it to dry for, literally, days (I'm talking a week...or more).
Well, there it is...my own diatribe on the acrylic paint survey.
Regards,
Ed |
