Jim,
I've just been reading over Armada's StuG III book and it contains some
interesting photos of F and F/8 in combat on the Eastern Front incl. many
with grey in their paint scheme.
Achtung Panzer on the StuG p 44 and 46 have photos of grey based StuG
captured by the Russians. Presumably these saw combat.
Some of the photos in the Armada book incl.
Photo 23 captioned F/8 Belgorod 43 grey with whitewash
Photo 25 F/8 Belorussia 44, grey clearly visible on edges that wear most
underneath white or yellow over-paint.
Photos 24, 26 F/8 most likely grey with light color as 2nd coat, notice dark
color around areas not usually painted as part of camo schemes and or areas
subject to wear, and that a band of the light color is on rubber of spare
road wheels suggesting its not the base coat
Photo 28 F (captioned as F/8 but has the F tow hooks and lighting) at
Kursk - dark (gray) base coat with thin brush width yellow camo. The yellow
tends to be on the more visible surfaces and solid grey on the less visible
areas like the sides of the mantlet etc.
Photo 29 Grey early G
I hope these examples explains why I referred to grey being a common base
color for these mid war StuG and how some of the yellow often seen in photos
is not the original base coat.
Cheers
