If you just want to remove paint from areas that need to be glued then just carefully scrape it off with your model knife.

For large areas oven clean works on enamel. Is this was the Tamiya spray cans are? I used Mr. Mussel here in Canada. Maybe spray a bit on a Q-Tip first, dab it on the model and see the effect. I won't affect the styrene.

Using thinning is a little dangerous as this can affect the styrene.

There are commercial paint removers too. Check an art supply store.
