Ted,
i usually use thinned artists oil paint to wash. mostly i use black or umbra (very dark brown) to wash. sometimes it is helpfull to brush some of the tinner first on the vehicle and then the washing with very little oilpaint and much thinner.
if it does not look like you want, just wash it of as long as it is not dry.
