I've used Apple Barrel (as well as Ceramcoat, FolkArt, etc) for painting on wargames figures. You *can* get good results with them, but like anything you have to thin the crap out of them. I think moreso than other paints. Additionally, you may find you need more coats to build up the neccessary color density than other paints. That $0.99 per bottle price-point is usually achieved by loading up on binder and fillers, and skimping on the pigments. Additionally, the pigment grind on some of them tend to be fairly coarse. The do work well, however, for washes (Folkart works better, in fact)...
