| Equipment acquired in the 1950's was mostly in French olive. In the 1960's a warm sand color was used. Shortly before the 1973 war, a new gray-green color was introduced, so-called Sand Gray. The latter color is available from Model Master. In recent years the issue paint has become darker. Individual unit commanders used to customize their vehicles' colors to match the local terrain, so vehicles in the Sinai didn't always match vehicles on the Golan front (I don't have the most recent info, so this may not be current-there may be different paint standards for the two areas now). The reason the paints look "off" to the eye is that vehicles seen in the field are always dusty, and this dramatically lightens the apparent color. When modelling, you can either start with the issue color and add layers of weathering to mimic the real dirt, or you can just start with a color that is close to the final dusty shade and weather less aggressively. |
